Dizzy when walking down the supermarket aisles? There might be an easy fix!
We all have a reflex (the Vestibulo Occular Reflex or VOR) that keeps the eyes focused on their target regardless of how one’s head moves around. Sometimes this reflex can be impaired which is referred to as vestibulopathy. Commonly people report these symptoms when walking with friends turning their heads while chatting, in the grocery store searching for items, or even when sitting in their car with the windshield wipers on. These symptoms are sometimes referred to as vertigo or dizziness, but more commonly people will relay that they feel they are walking as if they were drunk, or that they can’t seem to walk strait.
Does this sound like you? If so here’s a great exercise to try:
Grab two playing cards, and hold them about shoulder width apart about arm’s length infant of you. Turn your head back and forth looking at each card 10-20 times. Do your best to turn fast enough to make yourself a tiny bit dizzy, but not enough to let your symptoms significantly increase. These head turns are small- you shouldn’t be turning anywhere near far enough to create neck irritation.
